This is one of the local buses. The buses are all privately owned and it only cost one dollar to get on. Like everything else on island, they like to put their personal touch on it. This one is very basic but most of them have flames painted on the side or some other distinctive painting. Also, they have stereo systems that are probably worth more than the bus. You can here the hip hop playing a mile away.

This is KS MART; the best market on the island. I man from China owns it, doesn't speak a bit of english, but will stand there with a smile and listen to you and shake his head a lot. Very nice guy:) This place bakes every kind of bread throughout the day. It smells great throughout the village and taste even better.

This is called a "falie". Falie's are found throughout every village and they come in many different styles. They are used for village meetings, family dinners, celebrations, and any other gathering they may have. They come in every shape, size, and color imagineable.

I couldnt resist and cut down my first set of bananas today and hung them on the balcony to ripen.

There are banana trees everywhere.

This is a standard burial on the grounds of the village. Every village has a high chief that dictates what the members of his village do including: who to vote for, when to have parties, where housing can be built, etcetera. All family members are buried on sight next to their home in the village. Depending on status in the village determines how big the grave stone or burial site will be. Some are over one story tall and very elaborate.

I know everyone has seen a roster but not like the ones here; they are gigantic! Also, there are more chickens and rosters running wild here than I have ever seen in other countries.

This is called "bread fruit" and grows on trees all over the island. You can cook it any way you can possibly think of from open coals to sauteing with butter and sugar. You peel the outside, clean the inside that is somewhat fuzzy and cook it up.

This is an air cylinder hanging in the village. It is standard in every village and used to sound prayer time. The village "police" or a representative of the village "high chief" hits it in order to notify everyone of prayer time and silence is required. this happens every evening at 6pm.
