This weekend we continued our exploring. Gavin and Trevor took an ATV up Mt. Alava (1600 ft) part of the National Park of American Samoa. The trail goes through dense rain forest and ends at a metal stairway that leads to a TV transmission tower and the rusty remains of an old cable car terminal that once ran across Pago Pago Harbor. The views are spectacular. Unfortunately we left the camera behind so we will have to go again.

Fagasa Bay

On Sunday we went to Sliding Rock on the western side of the island. It's an impressive lava rock formation that continues right into the ocean and is VERY slippery. Both Trevor and I fell trying to hike the hot, rough 1/2 mile one way to the tidal pools and blowholes. Gavin was a real trooper. There were parts that required steep climbing and descending. We were not disappointed the crystal clear water in the tide pool was like an aquarium. And we had it all to ourselves.
Part of the hike....

Tide Pool

This is low tide. People get washed out during high tide so you have to be careful about when you visit.

Picture of the blowhole. The water would shoot up and then rush into the pool through a cave at the end. Gavin loved it.

Finally remembered the underwater camera but not the snorkel! I'll take more at the reef in front of our house as well. The coral at sliding rock was so beautiful.

The longer fish on the right is a Wrase and it is a rainbow of colors but the lighting in this picture is off. I will try to get another one. They almost look neon colored in person.
So beautiful! What an adventure!!!
