Palolo, Tattoo festival and Halloween

Three big events happened in AS this weekend.

First was the Palolo reefworm mating. This phenomenon of nature only happens once a year 7 days after the full moon in October (and sometimes in November depending on the full moon timing). The reefworm that lives in the coral around Samoa and Tonga islands mate at night usually starting at midnight and they glow. I am sorry to say we missed seeing them! It was very windy and stormy leading up to the reefworm appearance on Friday night so we didn't make it out. Palolo is a delicacy in Samoa and since it is so rare the locals were very pumped up this week. People will eat them raw right out of the ocean and some saute them and eat them on bread. They are suppose to be an aphrodisiac.

Then we had Halloween which we started celebrating Wednesday at the library and continued the celebration on Saturday at a Carnival and then Sunday trick or treating.

And finally Tisa's Annual Tattoo Festival was this weekend. I borrowed some pictures from a friend. When we went Sunday morning it was pretty boring so we didn't get any good pictures.

Traditional Tap Tap Tattoo.

Samoan with traditional tattoos and our friend Lea from France. Samoan men get the tattoo starting at the knee and going all the way up to the lower stomach. Women just get their thighs tattooed.

Next weekend is our big trip to Western Samoa. More pics to come. Happy birthday to Mama Phyllis and Eileen!
